Hot Flashes, Sleep Problems, and Mood Swings — Could Acupuncture Offer the Menopause Relief You’re Looking For?

acupuncture for menopause

If you’re navigating menopause, you already know that the hot flashes, night sweats, disrupted sleep, and emotional rollercoaster are real — and relentless. Many women feel like they’ve exhausted their options: hormone therapy isn’t right for everyone, and over-the-counter remedies often fall short.

But there’s an option that’s been quietly gaining serious scientific attention: acupuncture and East Asian medicine.

What the Research Says

Studies show that regular acupuncture sessions can meaningfully reduce the frequency and intensity of hot flashes and other vasomotor symptoms — the physical surges of heat and sweating that are one of menopause’s most disruptive hallmarks. Perhaps most surprising: many women begin to feel results after just 3 sessions.

Beyond hot flashes, acupuncture has been shown to improve sleep quality during menopause and support emotional balance. It works by stimulating the part of the nervous system that promotes a calm, grounded state — which, for anyone riding the hormonal waves of perimenopause or menopause, can feel nothing short of life-changing.

Why It Works

Acupuncture is thought to influence the body’s hormonal responses and calm the central nervous system, helping to reduce the intensity of the temperature dysregulation that causes hot flashes. It also triggers the release of endorphins — your body’s natural mood elevators.

What to Expect

A typical course of treatment for menopausal symptoms involves sessions 1–2 times per week for several weeks. Most women find it deeply relaxing — many fall asleep on the table. There are no drug interactions to worry about, no hormones introduced into your body, and the “side effects” are usually benefits that relieve other symptoms.

The Holistic Approach

At Jennum O’Hara Acupuncture, your provider will consider your nutrition and other lifestyle factors that could be supporting your wellness or aggravating symptoms. They may offer dietary shifts, herbal medicine, Qi Gong or other suggestions to help you get the most out of your treatment.

You don’t necessarily need to wait for a practitioner to tell you what to do. Many things help most people experiencing menopausal symptoms. Studies evaluating diet quality as it relates to menopause suggest you add more vegetables, unprocessed foods, and whole grains. Intake of highly processed foods (e.g., fast food, convenience foods), saturated fats (e.g., red meat, butter), and sugars had also been associated with increased intensity of sleep disorders as well as mood changes, hot flashes, bladder issues, and physical symptoms such as pain during menopause. Based on your individual needs, your practitioner may also recommend a specific type of diet.

Other lifestyle shifts you can make to support your symptoms include adding moderate exercise, practicing good sleep hygiene, and avoiding alcohol, caffeine, and cigarettes.

If you’ve been white-knuckling it through menopause and wondering if there’s another way — this might just be it! We’d love to talk with you about whether acupuncture could help you feel like yourself again.
