Get to Know: Jennum O’Hara

Jennum

I originally planned to go to Western medical school and considered physiatry and orthopedic surgery (especially after watching my own surgical procedure while it was being done!). During my undergrad, I volunteered in Hospice and relized that I wanted to be able to spend more time with patients and would ultimately like to help before surgical intervention was needed. I had been a patient of acupuncture but never considered it as a career until a random encounter led me to look into acupuncture schools in the US. After a few school visits, I met with the founders of TAI Sophia/Maryland University of Integrative Health and knew that’s where I needed to be.

I am currently not seeing patients in Maryland because our youngest son needed surgery out of state. I get to support people from afar and help support the practice as a whole so your wonderful providers can focus purely on your care. I loved working with patients in the office and miss teaching them about their health and symptoms. Luckily, the rest of the team shares their treatment successes with me so I get to experience that joy through them!

Personally, I relax after a long day by hanging out with my family. I am lucky to spend time with the best guys I know! I like to be outside as much as I can, in any weather. Many of my patients already know that I have been an athlete throughout my life – a competitive gymnast for over a decade, a springboard diver, I trained and taught hand-to-hand combat, have done multiple marathon ruck marches and continue to find interesting ways to stay active (mostly wrangling my wild kids)! When I want to expend a little less physical energy, I like to make ceramics, knit, and be nerdy about wellness and East Asian medicine. I love to fully live this medicine and I think that includes enjoying some things the classical texts and physicians may have advised against. I like a good cup of black coffee and the occasional ice-cold IPA. I think this only helps me as a provider because I will make suggestions to people without judgement, because I know I am far from perfect, too!

I am grateful to the amazing team of people who have kept offering exceptional care to our community while I cannot be there! I’m so glad to see people benefitting from this medicine and know that I get to play some small part in their healing.
