1. Understanding Healing Heat Sessions

What It Is: Moxibustion involves burning moxa (dried mugwort) near particular acupuncture points to stimulate circulation and enhance healing.

What it costs: Sessions are $45 and insurance does NOT cover them.

How long it takes: Your provider will likely only be in the room for about 10 minutes! You are welcome to relax and enjoy the impacts of treatment for a half hour or you can get right up and get on with the rest of your day!

Who can benefit: Just about anyone and it’s especially great if you get sick often, have allergies, feel run down, are recovering from illness, or recently had a baby. This period is especially important to boost immunity and overall wellness.

2. Before Your Appointment

Eat Lightly: Have a light meal or snack before your session to avoid dizziness or nausea.

Hydrate: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Wear Comfortable Clothing: Opt for loose, comfortable clothing that can be easily adjusted or rolled up to expose forearms and lower legs.

Avoid Caffeine and Alcohol: These can increase sensitivity and reduce relaxation, making the session less effective.

3. During Your Session

Communicate: Inform your acupuncturist about any current health conditions, medications, or if you’re pregnant. This is especially important if you suffer from neuropathy or lack of sensation in treatment areas. We want you to feel warmth with this treatment and it is NOT an endurance test. Let your provider know when the moxa feels hot.

Relax: Try to relax your mind and body as much as possible to enhance the treatment’s effectiveness.

Sensations: Expect to feel warmth but not discomfort. Inform your acupuncturist immediately if the heat becomes too intense.

4. After Your Session

Rest: Take it easy for a few hours post-treatment to allow your body to integrate the benefits.

Stay Warm: Keep your body warm after the session, including keeping exposed areas covered (i.e. wearing a scarf around your neck, etc.), as the treatment is often used to dispel cold and improve circulation.

Avoid Baths: Skip any immediate baths or showers to let the warmth and effects last longer.

Schedule multiple Healing Heat sessions during Moxa Season (the month of November) to get the  greatest impact.
